In the world of art, there is probably no one who hasn’t heard of the marvels created by Salvador Dali. Dali was one-of-a-kind of an artist and had gifted skills that enabled him to bring revolution in the stream of art.

What I was attracted to the most, was the fact that Salvador Dali traversed through his subconscious imagery and painted all those imaginations clearly over a canvas. Surrealism is an art style that is the product of visuals, an artist witnesses in his dreams or unconscious mind. Dali practiced the style of Surrealism, which was discovered by Andre Breton, so much so that his best artworks became the ideal examples of the style. His works prior to 1920s are drafted in impressionism, renaissance, and cubism. He was

nothing if not versatile, yet he was so influenced by surrealism that after joining the surrealist group in 1929, he mostly dealt in surrealism. Till date, 'The Persistence of Memory', a brilliant work of Dali, is considered the finest work in surrealism.

Following Dali's footsteps, I tried my hands on surrealism and composed ‘Rebel’, a painting in surrealism. The painting majorly plays with the character of water, a form that can naturally take the shape of its container. The water is depicted as the rebel here, who no more limits itself to the boundaries of the spoon or the concept of gravity. It is in the process of being liberated from its expected form. According to me, it portrays how the current generation is walking on the path of unmolding itself from the so called 'obsolete' customs, and moving towards fabricating a supposedly better system. There is an uncertainty in the initial stage of the movement in both the cases. The work is done with ink pencils and water colors.

What makes ‘Rebel’ different from Dali’s way of surrealism is that it’s not as bizarre as the latter’s work. Dali was a prominent artist who depicted eccentric scenarios in his surrealist paintings. His portrayal mostly included gloomy thoughts and bitter truths of life.
